In a press release published on February 4, 2010, Department of Commerce (Commerce) Secretary Gary Locke announced the details of the National Export Initiative (NEI) that President Barack Obama mentioned in his State of the Union Address last week.

According to the release, the NEI will focus on three main areas:
- Expansion of trade advocacy, especially with regard to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME)
- Improved access to credit for businesses interested in exporting
- Enforcement of international trade laws to help increase access to foreign markets

The release also states that the budget for Commerce's International Trade Administration (ITA) will be increased by 20 percent to help meet NEI goals, which include doubling exports over the next five years.
