President Signs Bill to Extend GSP, ATPA


On December 28, 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law a bill to extend the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) and the Andean Trade Preference Act (ATPA).

H.R. 4284, which was introduced into the House of Representatives on December 11, 2009, will extend the benefits of both GSP and ATPA for one year without change; both programs will expire on December 31, 2010.

According to a statement from the White House Press Secretary, GSP provides duty-free treatment to 131 developing countries, while ATPA applies to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
