U.S. and Japan Sign Agreement to Align Cargo-Security Standards
On July 1, 2009, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) published a press release announcing that the U.S. and Japan had signed a "mutual recognition arrangement" to align "security standards in international trade partnership programs critical to both countries."
Director General of Japan Customs and Tariff Bureau (CTB) , Hiroshi Fujioka, and CBP Acting Commissioner Jayson Ahern signed the agreement, which recognizes similarities and mutual standards between Japan's Authorized Economic Operators (AEO) program and the U.S.'s Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program.
According to the release, "the arrangement acknowledges that CTB and CBP will accept the security status of members of each other's programs," with the expected result of reduced supply chain security validations conducted by the administrations.
